Kilimanjaro — Lemosho Route
Discover Kilimanjaro — Lemosho Route with Zorani Expeditions.
Journey Overview
The Lemosho Route is the most highly regarded of Kilimanjaro's ascent paths. It approaches from the west, traverses the full length of the Shira Plateau, and joins the summit approach via Barafu High Camp. The eight-day schedule gives a significantly better acclimatisation profile than shorter routes, which translates directly into higher summit success rates. The scenery is exceptional throughout — the western approach through undisturbed forest, the open Shira Plateau, the Lava Tower at 4,600m, and the Barranco Wall scramble are all genuinely distinctive stretches of mountain.

Itinerary
Moshi / KIA to Londorossi Gate — Forest Camp
Transfer to Londorossi gate on the western side — approximately two and a half hours by road. Trek through undisturbed western rainforest to Forest Camp (2,600m). Three to four hours. Colobus monkey sightings are common on this approach.
Forest Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Climb out of the forest onto the open heath zone, crossing the Shira Ridge. First views of Kibo's glaciated summit. Arrive Shira 1 (3,500m) after five to six hours. Strong altitude gain — rest, hydrate, eat.
Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
A shorter walking day across the Shira Plateau — wide open moorland with views toward Mawenzi and, on clear days, back toward Lake Victoria. Arrive Shira 2 (3,840m) after three to four hours. Afternoon acclimatisation walk.
Shira 2 to Lava Tower — Barranco Camp
The key acclimatisation day. Walk up to Lava Tower (4,600m), spend time at altitude, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,950m). Walking high and sleeping lower is the reason this route has a higher summit success rate.
Barranco Camp — Barranco Wall — Karanga Camp
The Barranco Wall: a near-vertical scramble — hands and feet required in places, but not technically difficult. The views from the top back across the Shira Plateau are the best on the mountain. Continue to Karanga Camp (4,035m). Five to seven hours total.
Karanga Camp to Barafu High Camp
Ascend to Barafu High Camp — the launch point for all Lemosho summit attempts. Short walking day (three to four hours) to preserve energy. Sleep early. Summit push at midnight.
Summit Night — Uhuru Peak — Descent to Mweka Camp
Midnight departure. Ascend to Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Takes five to eight hours from Barafu. Descend to Barafu for a brief rest, then continue down the Mweka trail to Mweka Camp (3,100m). Total walking: twelve to fourteen hours.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate — Moshi
Final descent through rainforest to Mweka gate (approximately three hours). Summit certificates issued at the gate. Transfer to Moshi or Kilimanjaro airport.
