Great Migration — Mara River Crossings
Discover Great Migration — Mara River Crossings with Zorani Expeditions.
Journey Overview
Between July and October, approximately two million wildebeest and zebra push north through the Serengeti toward Kenya. The Mara River crossings — where the herds commit to crocodile-filled water under the pressure of those behind — are the most intense and unpredictable wildlife event in Africa. This nine-day journey is structured specifically around the northern Serengeti, with three full days at the Mara River. The crossings cannot be guaranteed. Three days gives the best available probability.

Itinerary
Arrival — Arusha
Arrive Kilimanjaro International. Transfer to Arusha. Evening briefing on migration status and current herd positions.
Arusha to Tarangire
Tarangire National Park
Drive to Tarangire. In July–October the park is at peak density — the river is one of the last permanent water sources in the region and elephant concentrations are at their annual maximum.
Full Day — Tarangire
Tarangire National Park
Full day. Dry months sharpen the Tarangire experience — vegetation thinner, sightlines longer, wildlife more concentrated. Wild dog denning possible in the southern sector in July.
Tarangire to Central Serengeti
Drive to the central Serengeti by road through the NCA (five to six hours including Olduvai stop), or by charter flight from Arusha or Lake Manyara airstrip (90 minutes — strongly recommended). By late July the migration has largely moved north of Seronera, but the central zone remains productive year-round.
Central Serengeti to Northern Serengeti
Charter flight from Seronera to Kogatende or Lamai airstrip — approximately 45 minutes. Arrive for an afternoon drive to locate current herd positions.
Full Day — Northern Serengeti · Mara River
First full crossing day. The Mara requires patience — herds pace the northern bank for hours before committing to the water. When a crossing begins, thousands of animals enter simultaneously. Crocodiles work the edges. Lunches are packed. You stay in the field until the light drops.
Full Day — Northern Serengeti · Mara River
Second full day on the Mara. Guide tracks herd movement between major crossing points. Between river sessions, the northern Serengeti's resident wildlife — leopard, lion, elephant — fills the day.
Full Day — Northern Serengeti
Third full day in the north. If crossings occurred on Day 6 or 7, today is for deeper exploration of the Lamai Wedge terrain and resident game. If crossings have not materialised, a third opportunity at the river.
Northern Serengeti — Departure
Final morning drive. Fly from Kogatende or Lamai to Kilimanjaro or Arusha. Onward connection.
